Big Hair Don't Care
GAH! Mercury is in retrograde, but that doesn't have to stop anyone for speaking up for what they believe in like Kanye or Zulaikha Patel. The 13-year-old proclaimed activist help lead a protest against the discrimination in her school. Patel's school, Pretoria Girls High School, a former white-only institution, has a hair policy that does not sit well with the determined Zulaikha. In the midst of her school's weekend fair, Patel and other participants protested against their school's hair policy. The policy states its restriction of black girls wearing their hair at school. Zulaikha was struck with taking action. Prior this notion, she had to move schools three times because of her hair which didn't go along with the code of conduct. One of the other regulations at the Pretoria High school is it prohibits students from speaking their own local African languages in the classroom. So, unfortunately, no #blackgirlmagic in ones hair and in her words are allowed in that school. "Fighting for every Black child in this country, because its time for our endless cries to be heard," Zulaikha stated. I, and many in this country stand with you for your authenticity and courage. And Zulaikha could inspire other black girls to have the confidence to wear their hair naturally. Zulaikha and others like her give encouragement for black girls to embrace the beauty of being a black girl. It doesn't matter how a black girl chooses to style their hair, either a fro, braids etc. If someone doesn't understand your beauty of being a black girl or your hair: Black hair don't care!
