Today is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the start of 16 days of activism against gendered violence. 93% of girls held in US juvenile detention centers are survivors of sexual or physical trauma; common offenses of theft, drug use, and domestic violence, where they are accused of hitting a parent or sibling, are often cries for help to be removed from an abusive situation. The rigid concept that people, especially young individuals, are their actions is very problematic because sometimes actions are steeped in traumas and violence that control choices beyond the rational. How can we seek to comprehend without an understanding of someone’s personal history? Girls are anthologized before they are understood as survivors with learned behavior patterns. They are shamed and labeled “bad girls” before they are even able to grasp their denied innocence. In the legal system, there is little integration of knowledge about the nervous system, gendered abuse, PTSD, attachment issues and repetition compulsion (reenacting trauma in different manifestations). As we move towards a more progressive grasp of individuals who have been subjected to war, it’s about time that we accept girls and women who have been subjected to prolonged violence as veterans of their own war and a very private one they carry in the depths of their consciousness.

The actress Amber Heard appeared in court in May 2016 with bruises around her eye after accusing then-husband actor Johnny Depp. Amber Heard appeared in court nearly a week later still showing signs of the injuries she sustained that night. Heard stated that she feared for her life to court. She made claims that Johnny Depp once attempted to smother his wife Amber Heard with a pillow, a friend of the actress has claimed, as the couple’s divorce becomes increasingly venomous. Intimate partner violence whether its from a former or current partner can cause physical and emotional harm. This form of violence his the most common experience among women globally. Before they turn 18, 1 in 6 boys experience sexual abuse. Before they turn 18, 1 in 4 experience some form of sexual abuse. We must resist and speak up for one another. Blaming a victim for staying in a violent situation will not help a victim mentally. There are many reasons people stay in abusive situation such as financial stability, fear, dependence etc. Times such as these, the "mind my own business" mantra shouldn't apply to witnessing physical and emotional abuse.

Quote of the Day:

"Don't let no one treat you like you're regular."-Cardi B
