10 Ways to Take Action & Fight Climate Change

There has been devastation of the aftermath during and immediately after the election. It didn't take anyone long before we felt threatened by the vows President-elect Trump has stated. All of the policies he has vowed to take control over has people scared for everything the country has worked hard so everyone can live in peace. As he enters in office in January there would be more added news to his plans as he steps into presidency. A few of those plans such as (uh hello looser gun restrictions), healthcare and immigration, one of the most discussed either the seriousness or concrete issues is climate change. Even though climate change wasn't a hot topic for discussion it does concerned voters in the election. The topic was pus during his campaign he has claimed that climate change was a hoax. It lacked discussion during the presidential debates. He has not only expressed the desire to stop the United States' involvement in the Paris Agreement, which currently involves 190 other countries and works toward lowering greenhouse gas emissions. He also wants to eliminate President Barrack Obama’s Clean Power Plan, which details regulations for domestic climate change. Trump would be able to make these decisions when or if he goes into presidential office. However he can't prevent us as individuals taking accountability for our day-to-day actions. Some of those actions contradict his plans. Here are 10 things you and your family can do right now to decrease your part in climate change.

  1. Keep a ceramic mug and refillable water bottle at your desk to avoid using paper or plastic cups.

  2. Bring reusable bags to the store when you go grocery shopping.

  3. Walk, bike, carpool, or take public transportation to/from school/work.

  4. Unplug your cell phone and laptop chargers when not in use.

  5. Recycle your plastic bags (and everything else!).

  6. Purchase food from a farmer’s market or eat at restaurants that serve locally grown food.

  7. Resist the urge to give in to fast fashion shopping (the products typically have a shorter lifespan) and donate clothing to consignment shops. Reduce, reuse and recycle!

  8. Turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth. Choose e-tickets over paper when you have the option for concerts, flights, events, etc.

  9. Donate to the Wildlife Conservation Society, Greenpeace, the Human Society or other environmental non-profits.

You can and should be doing what is in your means for you to do everything to save energy. whether its some or all of these ideas listed above. Or you can do what Lauren Singer did and produce less waste by shopping package-free, making her own products and refusing plastic and single-use items. She didn't send anything to landfills and no sending anything to the garbage. All of the materials she uses is in a Mason jar. She doesn't use No plastic! Sounds challenging but you can watch this video of Lauren explaining her environmentalist journey.
