How to Stay a Femininst During the Holidays
As aftermath of the astonishing and disappointment heard around the world of the result of Trump's shocking victory is still in everyone's minds. The action of Trumps words and actions as well as the action from his supporters has indeed caused a reaction of rebuttal. The fact that to so many that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote of the election however it feels like the Electoral College has disregarded all of the change and work that so many that provided open-mindedness and equality.
Despite the Republican president-elect's history of sexist remarks and behavior, xenophobic comments about immigration, and frankly baffling position on climate change-we could only assume the worst is yet to come that we will see our worst nightmares come true that he would soon that over office and the White House. Since its the time of the year where families travel to dine with family, it can be heart warming and heart-wrenching as opinions, comments and remarks that stir the tempered pot of animosity. You have to make a choice to be able to handle any word of discomfort with ease or to get your family member woke with your knowledge. As you might know your grandma can be upset about Trumps' win that can be depressing to even admit how you are just as disappointed too. You have every right to share your views about feminism. Here are some reasons why you should be a tough girl and express your feminist point of view even during the holidays.
It's More Effective Than Posting in Social Media
Social media users tend to interact with people that have similar political views online; indeed, this could be why so many people from both political parties were shocked by how close the election results were. So, posting about feminism with articulate words and memes on social media may feel good, but it's not likely to change any minds. On the other hand, people tend to develop preferences for the familiar. For example, the pervance of knowing people's stances on issues facing the people who identity as part of the LGBTQ.
It Would Be Inspiring
If you were raised by feminists, you probably heard about feminist stances from your parents, but if you grew up in a household where feminism wasn't the norm, it likely to feel like you're from an outside source. As annoying as it may be to debate politics with your uncle or grandparents at a holiday dinner, whether standing up for issues like Islam phobia or gender equality could wind up influencing the younger generations at the table.
They Would Compromise
Within heated or casual discussions on views that may seem so exclusive towards certain marginalized people: they could eventually agree with you. Stay strong even if you even are in Trump-heavy state and dinner table. Bring the facts: Trump won the electoral vote, but Clinton won the popular vote by a margin of hundreds of thousands. More than 61 million Americans voted for Clinton.
This Is A Historic Year
This year was historic for feminism. The future is female. We were so close to having history of a 45th president who is a female in pantsuits. It's safe to say most feminists probably didn't vote for Trump, but people don't have to call themselves feminists to acknowledge that Clinton's nomination was a huge stride forward in women's rights.
We Can't Allow Sexism, Racism, Ableism, And So Many Other Things That Are Not OK To Normalize
Many people are scared for their right for humanity that felt so aligned with President Obama's and America's accomplishments. There's no telling what's ahead, but in all likelihood, the administration of a man who said, alternately, that women should be punished for getting an abortion, his stances on gun control, human rights and healthcare providers punished for performing them, isn't going to advance an unlimited type of equality.
It can be hard when family whenever your family expresses racist or sexist undertones under the course of dinner. It can be hard to not speak up for your views of how to express your views without feeling bias or threatened or make yourself stand out like sore thumb. But your family loves you and they should respect your feminist/political views.
