Generations prior to today, the realization of what we all were taught in school about Christopher Columbus has been a lie. Yes, schools are closed on Columbus Day marked on our calendars. The old age tale of Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 is fabricated. The Indigenous People's Day is a proper and necessary day. Columbus and his troops did not discover America but stole land from Native Americans that is illegal immigration. The murder, rape and torture and enslavement of the people should not be honored as a holiday. If you choose to celebrate Christopher Columbus or if it gets a discussion in class know that Native Americans were stolen from what they call their homeland.

Columbus Day officially became a federal holiday in the United States in 1937. The holiday honors Christopher Columbus's achievements and celebrated Italian-American heritage. Opposition to the holiday originally began in the 19th century. Anti-immigrant groups in the U.S. rejected the holiday because of its ties to Catholicism. In recent years, Native Americans and other groups have denounced the holiday fro its celebration of colonization. He and his men enslaved Bahamian Natives and allegedly tortured people as the Governor of Hispanola. Since Columbus Day 2015, more than 14 U.S. cities and states observe Indigenous People's Day. Berkeley, California became the first city to celebrate the holiday in 1992. Countries like Brazil, and the Philippines have their own versions of Indigenous People's Day. In 2002, Venezuela renamed the holiday "Dia La Resistencia Indigena, "Or Day of Indigenous Resistance. Supporters of Indigenous People's Day say the holiday isn't about erasing history. Its about recognizing the oppression of certain groups of people. "As we pay tribute to the ways in which Columbus pursued ambitious goals, we also recognize the suffering inflicted upon Native Americans," Barack Obama said in 2015.

U.S. studies shown that Indigenous women experience sexual assault at higher rates than any other women at least 50% assault rates higher than the next most victimized demographic. The Violence Against Women Act of 2005 studies show found that homicide was the third leading cause of death among Native women. Most of the violence against Native women are non-Native men.

Christopher Columbus and his conquistadors tore Arawak babies from their mothers and fed them to their dogs alive. Hispaniola and other islands where Columbus raped and tortured Taino Arawaks. What happened during this day as well as Thanksgiving was a genocidal colonialist attack. However a limited amount of cities celebrate Indigenous People's Day. It's important to note that Native American's connection to their spiritual, the earth as well as their land was stripped away. Native Americans have been struggling with the same issues within the new presidential climate with their land being threatened to be removed also known as #StandingRock that is still prevalent to this day.

People on social media have shared their hatred over the discussion if Columbus statues to being considered a general historical symbol should not condemned. Stand up for the brothers and sisters that are unprivileged in their voices not only these "holidays" but every chance you get. #NativeStrong Stay Woke.
